Defect

The end piece of the speedometer cable, which connects to the speedometer gearbox, was improperly molded, causing play at the end piece mounting. Continued use allows driving vibration to loosen the end piece retaining screw. In the worst case, the tip of the speedometer gearbox pinion fractures, causing the speedometer to stop functioning.

Corrective action

All vehicles: replace the speedometer cable with a conforming unit. Additionally, inspect the clearance at the joint between the speedometer cable end piece and the speedometer gearbox; if clearance is present, replace the speedometer gearbox with a new unit.
