Filing in context
The Suspension arm / rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 24 Mitsubishi notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 2,076 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.
Defect
The ball joint connecting the lower arm and steering knuckle in the front suspension was insufficiently crimped on the retaining bracket during manufacturing. Continued use allows water to intrude through the affected area, causing rust on the ball and abnormal wear of the resin bearing. In the worst case, the ball joint may fracture and separate from the arm, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
All vehicles: inspect the lower arm ball joint. Units showing excessive wear are to be replaced with the corrected part. Units showing no abnormality are to have sealant applied to the crimp area. Because corrected parts require additional lead time, owners will be notified of the recall details and contacted for a service appointment once parts are available.
