Defect
In the automatic transmission, insufficient consideration of the control program allows component overspeed to go unsuppressed when a fault occurs. This causes transmission damage and renders the vehicle inoperable. In the worst case, transmission fluid leaking from the damaged unit may contact the exhaust pipe and cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the transmission control computer with the corrected software specification.
