Defect
Insufficient consideration of the press-forming process during development resulted in some intermediate shafts developing cracks at the joint section during forming. In service, these cracks may propagate and cause the shaft to fracture. In the worst case, this may result in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
Replace the intermediate shaft on all vehicles with a conforming part.
