Filing in context
The Computer (engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 23 Mazda notifications from 2024 in this archive. For scale, 1,470 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 1 month.
Defect
In mild hybrid vehicles, the engine control computer and mild hybrid battery use improper battery control logic, which may cause voltage differences to develop between cells inside the battery. Continued use allows these voltage differences to grow, triggering a fault judgment at engine startup. This causes the engine warning light to illuminate and a "Hybrid System Malfunction" message to appear on the instrument cluster, and motor assist may stop. If a fault judgment occurs during a vehicle-speed idling stop, in the worst case the engine may fail to restart, resulting in a stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control computer and mild hybrid battery control module with the corrected/updated software.
