Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 23 Honda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 541 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 8 months.
Defect
The remedial measures implemented under recall notification No. 1564 were inadequate, and some continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) were not replaced even though wear was present on the sliding surfaces of the oil pump vanes. Continued use allows the vanes to wear abnormally at an accelerated rate, preventing adequate hydraulic pressure from being maintained. In the worst case, the oil pump may fail and the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the oil pump vane wear. Units outside the inspection standard are to have the CVT replaced with one incorporating a corrected oil pump. Units within the inspection standard are to have the CVT oil pump replaced with a corrected part.
