Overview

Defect

On rotary dump refuse collection vehicles, an error in calculating the center-of-gravity position of the cargo body volume resulted in an incorrectly stated maximum payload rating. When loaded to the stated maximum payload, the vehicle does not conform to Safety Standards Article 9, Paragraph 2 (running gear) or Article 53, Paragraph 1 (seating capacity and maximum payload). In the worst case, the rear axle may be damaged or fractured under the excess load, or a tire may burst, leading to a serious accident.

Corrective action

(1) Replace the load center-of-gravity position nameplate with one calculated using the correct method. (Identified units) (1,233 units) (2) To secure the rated maximum payload, reduce the mass of installed components, or attach counterweights toward the front of the vehicle to reduce rear axle loading. (80 units) (3) For units exceeding the recommended tire load, replace the tires and wheels in accordance with each chassis manufacturer's specifications. (217 units) (4) Amend the maximum payload stated on the vehicle inspection certificate so that the allowable axle load and recommended tire load are not exceeded. (936 units)
