Filing in context
The Computer (Engine Control) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Toyota notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 757 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 5 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with an idling stop system, an incorrect control program combined with insufficient battery thermal insulation may cause the battery to reach and repeatedly operate at elevated temperatures during prolonged idling. Under these conditions, the regenerative charging intended to suppress battery degradation becomes insufficient, causing abnormal battery deterioration. As a result, the engine may fail to restart after an idling stop.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, update the engine control computer and idling stop computer programs to the corrected software. On certain vehicles, also replace the battery thermal insulation cover with a corrected part. In addition, inspect the battery for degradation and replace it with a new unit if abnormalities are found.
