Filing in context

Defect
In the rear axle of four-wheel-drive vehicles, the oil seal material is inappropriate for low-temperature operation, causing abnormal wear of the seal lip. This allows differential oil to leak. In the worst case, the leaked oil may contaminate the brake shoes and reduce braking force.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the oil seal with a corrected part and the retainer with a new part. Inspect the bearings and brake shoes; if oil contamination is found, replace the bearing alone or both the bearing and brake shoes with new parts as applicable.
