Filing in context
The Seat is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 36 Toyota notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 255 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 1 month.
Defect
In the seat reclining mechanism of the driver and front passenger seats, the spring spacer used to retain the reclining lock spring is molded with an improper end profile. Repeated reclining operation can cause the spring to disengage from the spacer, leaving the seatback unsupported. In the worst case, if the driver is unaware that the reclining lever has not returned to the locked position, the seatback may collapse unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a bush to the inner reclining mechanism of both the driver and front passenger seats to prevent the reclining lock spring from disengaging. If the spring has already disengaged, replace it with a new part.
