Defect
On large all-wheel-drive vehicles, the stud bolts securing the fan hub to the radiator cooling fan are improperly torqued during assembly. This causes cracks to form at the stud bolt insertion points in the hub, allowing the bolts to loosen. The cooling fan then develops rotational runout, imposing excessive load on the water pump housing at the hub mounting point. If the water pump housing fractures, the cooling fan assembly can detach and fall toward the radiator. In the worst case, the radiator core is damaged and coolant leaks, rendering the vehicle inoperable, or fragments of the water pump housing fall onto the road.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fan hub and stud bolts with new parts and torque the bolts to the specified value.
