Issue
On the bracket used to mount the stay on the power-operated rear gate, inadequate manufacturing controls have resulted in insufficient crimping of the ball stud on some units. If an upward force is applied beyond the fully open position of the rear gate, the ball stud may separate from the bracket, causing the rear gate and gate stay to drop and potentially strike a person.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the ball stud crimp on the bracket. Where crimping is insufficient, replace the power-operated rear gate stay with a non-defective unit.
