Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Subaru & Toyota.
The Other (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Subaru notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 461 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 8 months.
Defect
The valve train design in the engine is improper, subjecting the valve springs to loads exceeding design limits. Combined with microscopic inclusions in the spring material from normal manufacturing variation, the springs may fracture. This causes abnormal engine noise and engine malfunction, and in the worst case, the engine may stall while driving.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the valve springs with corrected parts.
