Defect

On low-floor tandem-axle large trucks, the clamp bolt and nut securing the left-side tie rod on the front-front axle are tightened to an incorrect torque, reducing the clamping force on some units. This allows play to develop at the tie rod end threads, permitting mud, water, and road salt to intrude. Continued use in this condition causes the tie rod end threads to deteriorate. In the worst case, the tie rod may pull free from the tie rod end, resulting in loss of steering control.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the front-front axle tie rod assembly with a conforming part.
