Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Computer (Suspension) as the affected component. This filing is one of 18 UD Trucks notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 4,147 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
On heavy-duty trucks with a rear two-axle air suspension, the maximum vehicle height setting for the ride height adjustment system is incorrect. When the vehicle is raised to the maximum height during loading or unloading operations, the rear rear-axle shock absorber exceeds its maximum range of travel. When the vehicle height is subsequently lowered, internal components deform and the suspension may not descend smoothly. Continued use may cause the shock absorber piston rod to fracture and interfere with the air spring, causing an air leak, or interfere with the tire and cause a burst. In the worst case, the heat generated may cause ignition.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, update the ride height adjustment system software and inspect the shock absorbers, replacing any damaged units with new parts.
