Filing in context
The Suspension arm / rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 18 Honda notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 1,458 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 4 months.
Defect
The surface treatment of the pivot arm bush in the front fork assembly is inadequate. The O-ring between the bush holder and bush wears prematurely, allowing grease to escape and increasing sliding resistance between the front pivot arm and the bush contact surface. Continued use subjects the right front pivot arm to excessive stress, causing it to fracture. In the worst case, when the front brake is applied, the front brake cable is pulled taut by the fractured arm, locking the front wheel and causing a fall or loss of mobility.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the pivot arm bush with a corrected part and replace the front pivot arm and O-ring with new parts. As an interim measure while corrected parts are being sourced, inspect the front pivot arm on all vehicles. On vehicles with confirmed operational abnormalities, replace the front pivot arm with a new part and apply grease to the pivot arm bush. On all other vehicles, apply grease to the pivot arm bush.
