Filing in context
The Suspension Arm / Rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 41 Honda notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 1,728 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
On the front fork, improper chamfering of the bush holder end and improper surface treatment of the pivot arm bush allow grease between the bush holder and bush to escape. Once the grease is lost, sliding resistance between the front pivot arm and the bush flank increases significantly. Continued operation subjects the right front pivot arm to excessive stress, causing it to fracture. In the worst case, when the front brake is applied, the front brake cable pulls on the fractured arm, locking the front wheel and causing a fall or loss of mobility.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the front fork with a corrected part and replace the front pivot arm with a new part. Because supply of corrected parts will take time, the following interim measures apply immediately: inspect the front pivot arm on all vehicles. If abnormal operation is confirmed, replace the front pivot arm with a new part and apply grease to the pivot arm bush. On vehicles where no abnormality is found, apply grease to the pivot arm bush.
