Filing in context

The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 40 Nissan notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 1,642 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.

Defect

On vehicles equipped with an idling stop system, the starter-generator has insufficient electrical circuit resistance, allowing the high current drawn during idling stop restart to damage internal components. This damage may cause a short circuit, preventing the engine from restarting after an idling stop event. In the worst case, the short circuit may generate heat and cause the starter-generator to burn.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the starter-generator with a corrected part. Because corrected parts require additional preparation time, the idling stop function will be disabled on affected vehicles until the replacement is completed.
