Defect
On vehicles without an idling stop system, the motor coil and shaft of the starter motor have insufficient interference fit. Cranking loads cause the motor coil to shift out of position. Continued use allows the brushes to deform, leading to starter malfunction. In the worst case, the brush holder may fracture, causing a short circuit and ignition.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the affected starter motor with the corrected/revised part.
