Defect
The engine control unit software for the starter system contains an incorrect control program. When the ignition switch is turned to start the engine while simultaneously shifting the selector from P to N, the starter pinion gear may forcefully engage the torque converter ring gear. The impact from this engagement can damage the pinion gear, causing abnormal noise during subsequent start attempts. In the worst case, the engine may fail to start.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control unit software. Additionally, inspect the starter pinion gear; if damage is found, replace both the starter and the torque converter with new parts.

状況
エンジンの始動装置(スタータ)において、エンジンコントロールユニットの制御プログラムが不適切なため、エンジン始動時のイグニッションスイッチ操作と同時に、シフトをPからNレンジに操作すると、スタータピニオンギヤがトルクコンバータのリングギヤに強勘合することがある。そのため、勘合時の衝撃により当該ピニオンギヤが損傷して、エンジン始動時に異音が発生し、最悪の場合、エンジンが始動できなくなるおそれがある。
改善措置
全車両、エンジンコントロールユニットの制御プログラムを書き換える。また、スタータピニオンギヤを点検し、損傷が認められたものはスタータ及びトルクコンバータを新品と交換する。
