Filing in context
The Propeller Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 52 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 UD Trucks notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 3,679 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
On heavy-duty trucks, the propeller shaft spline shaft is undersized, resulting in excessive clearance between the spline shaft and its mating flange. This allows abnormally high loads to act on the bolts that secure the flange to the spline shaft. Continued use in this condition may cause the bolts to fracture. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may detach, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the propeller shaft with a conforming part.
