Filing in context
The Drive Power Supply (Battery) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,840 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 months.
Defect
In the Cell Monitor Unit (CMU) inside the drive battery, the control program is incorrect, causing power consumption to continue even after the power switch is turned off or charging is complete and the vehicle is stationary. This causes the battery cell voltage to keep dropping. As a result, the vehicle enters a fail-safe state in which external charging is disabled, the EV system warning light illuminates during driving, operation is restricted to EV driving within the remaining drive battery charge without engine recharging, and both driving output and maximum speed are limited. If driving continues until the battery is depleted, the vehicle becomes inoperable. Depending on the degree of cell voltage drop, the vehicle may also fail to start.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the CMU control program with the corrected software.
