Filing in context
The Cooling System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 17 Honda notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 1,469 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
The distance between the end of the flange that secures the belt pulley and the inner bend of the pulley is too short. After the pulley is fastened, the flange may ride up onto the inner bend, creating a gap. Repeated loading from the accessory belt then wears the inner bend of the pulley, causing the fastening bolts to loosen and eventually fracture, allowing the accessory belt to disengage. This results in loss of charging function and engine cooling failure, illuminating a warning lamp. In the worst case, the engine stalls and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
Replace the belt pulley on all vehicles with the current production part.
