Filing in context
The Cooling System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Honda notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 760 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years.
Defect
The water pump pulley fastening holes have a raised boss on their reverse face. Repeated accessory belt loads applied to this boss cause wear, which allows the fastening bolts to loosen. The bolts may then fracture, causing the accessory belt to detach. This results in charging failure and engine cooling failure, illuminating warning lights. In the worst case, the engine stalls and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the pulley fastening bolts with corrected parts that have thread-locking compound applied to the threaded portion, and torque them to the specified value.
