Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 5 Honda notifications from 2012 in this archive. For scale, 1,214 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 11 months.
Defect
The branch connector on the main harness is covered only with tape, leaving it vulnerable to water ingress. During rain or wet-road driving, water entering through the end of the main harness travels through the protective tube and floods the connector. The accumulated water then wicks along the wire cores and reaches the rear-wheel brake lamp switch, causing the switch contacts to rust and lose conductivity. As a result, the brake lamp may fail to illuminate when the rear brakes are applied.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, correct the tape covering the electrical wiring connector and replace the rear-wheel brake lamp switch with a new unit.
