Defect
The rear-wheel brake light switch has an inadequate waterproofing design. Heat radiated from the catalytic converter raises the switch to high temperature; when the switch is then exposed to water and cools rapidly, moisture is drawn in through the switch cover. This causes the contacts to rust and lose continuity. As a result, the brake light may fail to illuminate when the rear brakes are applied.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the rear-wheel brake light switch with a corrected part.
