Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Isuzu & Nissan.
The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 42 Isuzu notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 2,401 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), the engine control unit's automatic regeneration activation conditions—the combustion removal of collected particulate matter—are incorrectly programmed, causing automatic regeneration to occur excessively frequently during very low-speed or very short-distance driving. This allows excess fuel to mix into the engine oil. If the vehicle continues to be operated with the engine oil level above the specified volume, engine oil enters the intake path, producing white smoke and causing engine speed to rise uncontrollably. In the worst case, the engine may stall and fail to restart.
Corrective action
Reprogram the engine control unit software on all vehicles and replace the engine oil with fresh oil.
