Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Isuzu & Nissan.
The Engine Control Computer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 18 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 42 Isuzu notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 2,401 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.
Defect
In vehicles equipped with a DPF (diesel particulate filter), the engine control computer sets an incorrect idle speed during cabin heating operation, causing black smoke and excessive PM (particulate matter) accumulation in the filter. This causes the engine to run poorly and, in the worst case, may result in a stall from which the engine cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the engine control computer software is reprogrammed and the engine oil is replaced with new oil.
