Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
This filing is one of 21 Mazda notifications from 2010 in this archive. For scale, 105 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 2 months.
Defect
The fresh-air intake structure of the air conditioning system is improperly designed, allowing rainwater to enter the blower fan motor. This causes the motor bearings to rust and seize, stopping the blower fan and disabling the defroster. Additionally, on vehicles equipped with manual air conditioning, the fuse protecting the blower speed control resistor may fail to blow. In the worst case, this can result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a cover to the fresh-air intake port and inspect the blower fan motor. If rust is found, replace the blower fan motor with a new unit. On vehicles with manual air conditioning where rust is present in the blower fan motor, also replace the blower speed control resistor with a corrected part.
