Filing in context

The Steering Linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 45 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 29 Hino notifications from 2009 in this archive. For scale, 2,990 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.

Defect

On route buses, the steering cut angle is incorrect. When studded winter tires are fitted and the steering is turned to its maximum lock while traversing a step or bump, or when the vehicle is operated at increased ride height, the tires may contact the drag link. Continued operation in this condition causes rust to develop at the contact point and, in the worst case, the drag link may fracture, resulting in loss of steering control.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, affix a caution label near the driver's seat. On vehicles fitted with tires and disc wheels that may contact the drag link, adjust the cut-angle stopper. If contact marks are found on the drag link, replace it with a new part.
