Filing in context
The Other (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 49 Mitsubishi notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 4,662 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 11 months.
Defect
Improper machining of the engine rear mount seating surface results in insufficient clamping force on the mount fixing bolts. Repeated hard acceleration or rough-road driving may cause the mounting bolts to loosen. Continued use allows the bolts to fall out, shifting the engine from its installed position. In the worst case, gear shift operation may become difficult or impossible, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the torque on the engine rear mount fastening bolts. If torque is within the specified range, retighten to the specified value. If torque is below the specified value, replace the mount and fastening bolts with new parts. Simultaneously inspect the bolt thread holes in the flywheel housing and replace the flywheel housing if damage is found. If all fastening bolts on one side of the mount have fallen out, also inspect the propeller shaft for play.
