Filing in context

The Propeller Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 52 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 23 Hino notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,541 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 1 month.

Defect

On four-wheel-drive fire trucks equipped with an automatic transmission, the clearance between the front-axle propeller shaft and the automatic transmission oil line mounting bolts is insufficient. During hard braking or other events that cause significant front-end dive, the propeller shaft and the oil line mounting bolts may contact each other. Continued operation under this condition damages the propeller shaft and, in the worst case, causes it to fracture, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, add a spacer to the front axle suspension to secure adequate clearance between the propeller shaft and the oil line mounting bolts. Inspect the propeller shaft; if contact marks are present, replace the propeller shaft with a new one.
