Filing in context
The Brake Lamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 15 Honda notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 391 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 4 months.
Defect
The brake lamp and tail lamp bulbs are improperly installed in their sockets. During vehicle operation, vibration causes the bulb terminals and socket terminals to rub against each other, generating wear particles that accumulate at the socket terminals. This accumulation increases electrical resistance, producing heat that melts the socket terminal insulation board. The resulting short circuit between the socket terminal and the compression spring blows the fuse, causing the brake lamps and auxiliary brake lamps to stop functioning and the horn to become inoperative.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the complete rear lighting wiring harness (from connector to socket) with corrected parts, and replace the brake lamp and tail lamp bulbs with new units.
