Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 3,039 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 10 months.
Defect
On large buses, the electrical wiring routed through the engine compartment is improperly routed, causing it to contact the bolts securing the muffler on some vehicles. Continued operation allows road vibration to abrade the wiring insulation, leading to a short circuit. In the worst case, the brake lamps and other rear-facing lights may fail to illuminate, or the engine may stall and fail to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add an interference-prevention bracket to the affected area and secure the wiring to the bracket with a band clip. Inspect the wiring and, if damage is found, repair it.
