Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Steering linkage is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 22 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 1,302 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
In the steering linkage, the bolts and nuts securing the right-side steering knuckle to the front strut may have been tightened with insufficient torque. These fasteners may loosen and fall out, causing a reduction in straight-line stability. In the worst case, steering control may be lost.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, tighten the affected bolts and nuts to the specified torque. On vehicles where the nuts have already fallen out, replace both the bolts and nuts with new parts.
