Filing in context
The Engine Control Computer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 18 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 25 Mazda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 996 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
The engine control unit software is incorrectly programmed, causing the engine to remain at high RPM without returning to idle. If the vehicle is stopped without switching off the engine, the engine may continue running at high RPM. This abnormally elevates the temperature beneath the vehicle floor, which can melt the resin fuel tank, electrical wiring, and parking brake cable sheathing. In the worst case, this leads to a fuel leak, engine stall, or parking brake malfunction.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the resin fuel tank and related components; replace any damaged parts with new ones. On vehicles not equipped with a heat shield pad, install the pad. Additionally, reprogram the engine control unit software or replace the unit with a corrected part.
