Filing in context
The Suspension Arm/Rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 24 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 4,782 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
On vehicles with independent front suspension, the dust boot seal design on the upper and lower arm ball joints is inadequate, allowing mud and water to enter the joints. This causes the resin bearing to wear and develop play. Continued operation allows the play to increase and, in the worst case, the ball joint may separate from the suspension arm, rendering the vehicle inoperable. (Note: This recall supplements the original filing dated October 27, 2004, Notification No. 1287. Additional vehicles are being added due to an omission in the original scope selection.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the lower and upper arm ball joints are replaced with corrected parts. Inspection and maintenance procedures for the affected areas are also enhanced and communicated to users to promote attention to periodic inspections.
