Filing in context
The Frame is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 39 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 4,477 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 4 months.
Defect
On vehicles modified to extend the wheelbase, improper welding instructions for the frame caused the end of the main frame to be melted into the weld when attaching the inner reinforcement plate, creating a notch in the main frame. This notch concentrates stress at that location and may cause a crack to develop in the main frame.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, remove the weld penetration at the main frame end and replace the lower reinforcement plate with a corrected part that covers the affected area. Additionally, replace the cross member gusset with a corrected part shaped to cover the affected area. Inspect the frame, and repair any cracks found.
