Defect

The bracket securing the steering gear box to the cross member on the right side (one of two mounting points) has insufficient plate thickness on certain vehicles. Repeated full-lock steering maneuvers can cause the bracket to fracture. This results in abnormal noise and excessive steering play, and in the worst case, the driver may lose the ability to steer reliably.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the affected bracket with a conforming replacement.
