Filing in context
The Axle Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,779 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
On some four-wheel-drive vehicles, the rear axle shaft has been machined to improper dimensions. Repeated acceleration and turning maneuvers may cause the lock nut to loosen. In the worst case, the lock nut may disengage completely, causing a wheel to separate from the vehicle. Note: This notification is filed because replacement parts supplied under the recall filed April 9, 2004 (Notification No. 1062) were found to include components machined to improper dimensions, and those parts were installed on vehicles. This notification addresses corrective action for those vehicles.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the rear axle shaft; on any vehicle where improperly machined dimensions are suspected, replace the complete rear axle shaft assembly with a conforming unit and replace the lock nut with a new part.
