Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Isuzu & Nissan.
The Exhaust Emission Control Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 40 Isuzu notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 1,515 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
The wire mesh used to secure the catalyst substrate inside the catalytic converter is made of an inappropriate material. During sustained high-speed driving, exhaust heat causes the wire mesh to oxidize and deteriorate, allowing the catalyst substrate to contact the converter case and generate abnormal noise. Continued use will wear down and degrade the catalyst substrate, causing exhaust emissions to exceed the regulated limit.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the catalytic converter with a corrected part.
