Filing in context
The Other (electrical system) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 19 Nissan notifications from 2003 in this archive. For scale, 652 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 10 months.
Defect
The brake light switch contact type is inappropriate for the electrical load applied to it. During service, oxidation builds up on the contacts, increasing contact resistance. In the worst case, the contacts fail to conduct and the brake lights no longer illuminate.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the switch with a corrected part and add or replace the associated electrical wiring. On some models, a relay is also added.
