Filing in context
The Manual Transmission (M/T) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 309 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 9 months.
Defect
On manual transmission vehicles (excluding turbocharged models), the front bearing mounting bore in the case that supports the transmission countershaft has insufficient machining precision, and the front bearing has inadequate strength margin. These conditions allow the front bearing to sustain damage during vehicle operation. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the countershaft may fracture, in the worst case rendering the vehicle unable to operate in any gear other than 4th.
Corrective action
Replace the manual transmission on all vehicles with a corrected unit incorporating the design improvements. (Because supply of corrected parts requires time, all owners will be notified of the defect as an interim measure, and manual transmissions will be replaced with corrected units on a rolling basis.)
