Filing in context

The Drivetrain / Power Transfer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 3,194 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 15 years and 7 months.

Defect

Issue 1: In the transmission, insufficient oil supply to the transfer case causes inadequate lubrication. Continued operation allows the gears and bearings inside the transfer case to seize, and in the worst case, the vehicle becomes inoperable. Issue 2: In the transmission hydraulic circuit, the relief valve for the oil cooler is improperly shaped, causing the relief valve to malfunction. This reduces oil supply to the transfer case, leading to inadequate lubrication. Continued operation allows the gears and bearings inside the transfer case to seize, and in the worst case, the vehicle becomes inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, add a forced lubrication assembly and replace the relief valve with a corrected part.
