Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 6 Suzuki notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 1,717 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 8 months.
Defect
In the electrical system, the carburetor heater wiring was incorrectly routed on certain vehicles. Engine vibration during operation pulls the wiring taut, fracturing the carburetor heater terminal and allowing it to hang loose. In the worst case, the fractured terminal contacts surrounding components, causing a short circuit that blows the ignition system fuse, stalling the engine and preventing restart.
Corrective action
Inspect the carburetor heater terminal on all vehicles. (1) Where the terminal is damaged, replace the carburetor heater with a new unit and re-route the wiring with sufficient length to remain slack during engine vibration. (2) Where the terminal is not damaged, re-route the wiring with sufficient length to remain slack during engine vibration.
