Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Nissan & Nissan Diesel.
The Parking Cable / Rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Nissan notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 3,401 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 8 months.
Defect
In the primary brake system, the boots on the wheel cylinder of the air-actuated parking brake have insufficient air-tightness. Continued use allows water to enter the boot, causing rust to form on the wedge guide sliding surface and seizing it in place, preventing the parking brake from releasing. In the worst case, brake fade may occur.
Corrective action
1. On all vehicles, replace the rod with a corrected/revised part, replace the boot with a new unit, and add a retaining band. 2. On all vehicles, inspect the wedge guide sliding surface; if rust is present, replace the wedge guide integrated wheel cylinder and diaphragm with new units.
