Defect

On vehicles equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission, the bolts securing the bearing retainer plate inside the transmission are insufficiently torqued. Continued use allows the bolts to loosen, producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, the bolts may fall out and jam the reduction gear, or the transmission case may break and leak oil, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the continuously variable automatic transmission with a conforming unit.
