Filing in context
The Continuously Variable Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Nissan notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 4,244 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission, the bolts securing the bearing retainer plate inside the transmission are insufficiently torqued. Continued use allows the bolts to loosen, producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, the bolts may fall out and jam the reduction gear, or the transmission case may break and leak oil, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the continuously variable automatic transmission with a conforming unit.
