Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The M/T is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Mazda notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 340 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 2 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, improper assembly of the gear shift control cable during production caused the inner cable to deform on some units. Continued use concentrates stress at the deformed section of the cable during gear shift operation. In the worst case, the cable fractures and shift operation is lost.
Corrective action
Replace the gear shift control cable on all vehicles with the corrected/revised part.
