Defect

On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the stop lamp switch was manufactured using an improper process. Grease applied to the pedal bracket and anti-rust oil applied to the return spring migrate into the interior of the switch and carbonize, increasing electrical resistance. Continued use may cause the shaft to deform due to heat generated within the switch, rendering the switch inoperative. In the worst case, the shift-lock function cannot be released and the stop lamps fail to illuminate.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, wipe the grease from the pedal bracket and replace the stop lamp switch with the corrected/revised part.
