Overview
| MLIT filing number | 1105690 |
|---|---|
| Type | Statutory Recall (government-mandated recall) |
| Date filed | May 20, 1999 |
| Manufacturer(s) | Nissan |
| Component | Alternator |
| Production period | March 26, 1997 — July 31, 1997 |
| Vehicles affected | 4,863 units |
Defect
During the manufacturing process, some diodes in the rectifier circuit of the alternator were improperly assembled. Continued use causes the diodes to deteriorate and fail, allowing excessive current to flow through the rectifier circuit and generating heat. In the worst case, the resin components of the rectifier circuit may melt and the unit may emit smoke.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the alternator with a non-defective unit.
